Dealing with Back-to-School Anxiety

Dealing with Back-to-School Anxiety Everyone feels anxious on the first day of school. Even kids who love school and look forward to the first day feel some butterflies in their stomach as they wonder what their new teacher and classmates will be like. For kids with ADHD who have struggled with school in the past and whose relationships with classmates have often been challenging, the back to school jitters that they experience are often more intense than most. Even if they dont talk about feeling nervous, the anxiety will still be there and may show up in other ways like uncharacteristic irritability, difficulty sleeping, and complaints about stomachs and headaches. As a parent it can be hard to know how to help your child cope with his or her anxiety. In addition to strategies that help with everyday anxiety, like taking deep breaths or distracting yourself from anxious thoughts, there are a few important things you can do to help your child cope leading up to the first day of school. Help your child know what to expect. Anxiety often stems from not knowing what to expect when were doing something new for the first time. While you cant predict everything that will happen on the first day of school, there are things you can do to make the day feel more familiar and predictable for your child. Visit the school ahead of time and walk with your child to his or her new classroom. Allow your child to have some fun playing on the play structure or shooting hoops on the basketball court. Talk to your child about his or her new teacher. Share some of the good things that youve heard from other parents and kids. If its possible, have your child meet the new teacher ahead of time or create an opportunity for him or her to talk to a former student who enjoyed having that teacher in the past. Make sure your child is introduced to at least one classmate before the first day of school. If youre new to the area, talk to neighbors or someone at your childs new school to get tips on reaching out to some of your childs peers ahead of time. Create a back-to-school morning routine and start practicing in the week leading up to the start of school https://huntingtonhelps.com/resources/adhd-blog/back-to-school-routines-for-kids-with-adhd. Encourage your child to share their feelings. Some of our greatest fears can lose their power when we share them out loud. Not all kids are eager to talk about their anxiety, so some gentle encouragement may be needed. Ask your child questions about how he or she is feeling. Avoid emotionally loaded questions like, Are you nervous about starting school this year? Instead, ask neutral questions that allow your child to set the tone of the conversation. For example, What do you think the first day of school will be like this year? If he or she doesnt respond to your direct questions, avoid pushing your child to talk. Instead, be on the lookout for times when your child casually mentions how they are feeling about the upcoming school year. Use those moments as an opportunity to listen and respond with empathy and encouragement. Empathize when he or she expresses feelings of anxiety, or when he or she shuts down and seems walled off. Let your child know that you understand that it can be hard to go back to school, and that he or she might wish that summer could go on forever. Normalize his or her feelings by sharing some of your own personal experiences with back to school jitters. Create space to focus on the positives. Anxiety causes us to naturally focus on the negative aspects of a situation. Remind your child about the things he or she enjoyed at school last year even if he or she says that recess and art class were schools only two redeeming qualities! Its important for your child to have something to genuinely look forward to when he or she heads through the school doors on the first day. Help your child feel in control of some aspects of his or her day. When kids return to school they have very little control over how their day will go. They are more or less told what to do and when to do it from the moment they wake up in the morning until school ends for the day. You can help you child feel more in control by allowing him or her to make choices and decisions about small things that will impact his or her day. Here are a few ways that you can build in some choices: Allow your child to pick out the snack that will be included in his or her lunch. Ask your child if he or she would like to get to school early to play on the play structure for a few minutes, or if he or she would prefer to arrive right on time and head straight into the classroom. Let them pick out his or her first day of school outfit. Ask if he or she would like to choose the radio station in the car. If you walk your child to school, ask if he or she would like to choose the route that you take. Engage in conversations about choices that your child will be able to make throughout the school year. For example, he or she may be able to choose a musical instrument to play, a sports team to join, or sign up for a special afterschool activity. As a parent you cant take away all of your childs back-to-school anxiety. In fact, some anxiety is normal for everyone in the family at this time of year. But you can help your child cope with his or her anxiety by helping him or her feel more in control, creating space for him or her to share his or her feelings, and helping him or her know what to expect on the first day back at school. LOI English Teachers Kathryn Johnson

LOI English Teachers Kathryn Johnson Getting to know people from all over the world is one of the perks of working and learning online. It is fun to talk to people with different backgrounds, that is why many of the LOI English teachers say that they love meeting new people and  Kathryn Johnson is an example of that.Kathryn is from the United States and has a degree in Latin American Studies from the University of California. Nowadays, she is living in Chile and teaches English to people from around the world. Normally, her students are from Brazil, Russia and Japan, but she has also taught English in Chile in a government program to help students improve their TOEIC score. She told me that she had lived in Chile in 2005, when she got her certification to teach English, but then she moved back to the US.  Kathryn believes that going where you feel happy is the most important thing, so when she was feeling stuck, she decided to move back to Chile to live by the shore, improve her Spanish and teach English.Kathryn said tha t she believes that the issues that Spanish and Portuguese speakers have are very similar and she uses her knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese to help those students. When I asked her what type of materials she normally uses to allow students to understand abstract concepts or to improve their knowledge of the language, she confessed that she is not that good with book references and said  that she usually refers to movies to explain some concepts to her students. For example, one time, when she was trying to explain the meaning of the word mumble, she used the movie Dick Tracy, that has a character named Mumbles, played by Dustin Hoffman, that mumbles a lot! According to her, watching movies can also help improve the understanding and proper use of phrasal verbs. She also said that cultural differences sometimes can get in the way of learning English. That is why she tries to incorporate cultural aspects in the learning process, making sure to explain or give references of movies tha t can help students know more about the culture of English speaking countries and therefore be able to better assimilate her teachings.Kathryn is very easy to talk to and our conversation was pure fun. If you are looking for a teacher that engages in interesting conversations and lets you speak about what you like, she is definitely a good option!

This Aspiring Diplomat Learned to Never Give Up This Aspiring Diplomat Learned to Never Give Up Impa, 12-years-old, Level L Math, Reading Program Completer Just over a year ago, 12-year-old Impa successfully completed the Kumon Reading Program, which ends with analyzing the works of Shakespeare. Now, she is working towards completing the Kumon Math Program as well. It’s no surprise that Impa is ahead of her peers in school, while she’s already studying the introduction of calculus in the 7th grade. “Working on challenging material in Kumon makes me realize how important grit and dedication are,” said Impa. “I feel so proud and satisfied with myself every time I think back to those moments. I now know that the hardest mountain is the best one to conquer!” Wow, inspiring words from such a young girl. Impa’s tenacity and work ethic will be key factors in helping her achieve her dreams of one day becoming a diplomat. Outside of the classroom, Impa maintains an active lifestyle by participating in competitive volleyball, swimming, dance, and hiking â€" just to name a few. She is proud to say that she was the only student selected from her school to be a part of Envision. This prestigious STEM Program seeks bright students from across the country for the opportunity to not only work towards their future success, but to also get a real hands-on STEM experience. Members of the program work on projects that mirror real-world challenges, and require a great level of innovation, creativity, critical thinking skills, and communication. Impa’s hard work and dedication was recognized, having been one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had the opportunity to speak to Impa about her Kumon journey thus far. How has Kumon helped you academically? Kumon has helped me academically by giving me advantages in school. I recently got transferred to a new school which teaches at a level above your current grade. I am currently in 7th grade, however I am learning 8th grade level material. Thanks to Kumon, my school work feels like a breeze. I am also in the Gifted and Talented Program, which teaches me new material that’s ahead of my peers. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has helped me outside of the classroom by teaching me what grit and perseverance are. Because of the level of commitment that Kumon takes, I learned to never give up. I have learned that pushing forward and looking at the big picture helps me. Each day, I am striving for excellence. What keeps you motivated in Kumon? At first, Kumon feels like a hurdle. At times it feels very difficult to reach, overcome, and finish. Once you’ve gotten over the “hurdle,” it feels great! Knowing I already completed the Kumon Reading Program keeps me motivated to work through any tough levels in Math. What did attending the Student Conference mean to you? It was such a special moment for me, and I realized right then that the past six years were completely worth it. I would tell anyone that joining Kumon was the best decision I ever made! What advice do you have for other Kumon Students? I would tell other Kumon Students that despite any challenge they may face, Kumon is going to be the one thing that you’re going to be so thankful for. Discover even more student success stories. How an Irvine Tutor Can Help With College Admissions Part II

How an Irvine Tutor Can Help With College Admissions Part II An Irvine Tutor Can Help with College Applications (Part II) An Irvine Tutor Can Help with College Applications (Part II) Resumes and Supplements Many schools ask for resumes as part of your application, have additional supplementary requirements, or allow for these additions as optional portions of your application.   As an experienced tutor can help guide you through these portions.   Should you add supplemental information, is it optional?   What should be included in your resume?   How do you answer the extra questions they ask?   Some of the questions seem random or weird; how do they want you to answer them? An experienced tutor can guide you through these questions and more.   You should never be confused about how to answer a question or what a college is looking for. Recommendations Your tutor probably isn’t someone who will be writing you a letter of recommendation for your applications.   However, they can definitely help you gather good ones.   Students are often very nervous about asking teachers and superiors for letters of recommendation.   They don’t know who to ask or how to ask, and most importantly, they don’t know if the letters they are receiving are good. But your letters of recommendation can be a huge part of your applications.   A bad letter can tank your admission decisions, and lukewarm or generic letters can keep you out of your top schools who were looking for more. A tutor can help guide you through the process.   They know what colleges are looking for in letters of recommendation and are familiar with the process.   They can help you ask the right people the right way.   Your letter writers should know what you want included to better your acceptance chances.   Your tutor may also help you diversify your letter writers if you are submitting several applications, and guide you on how to know if the letters you are getting are high quality. Planning and Review Overall, the college search and application process is stressful, time-consuming, and confusing to navigate.   Couple that with all of the other added stress going on in a student’s life during this time, and you have a formula for procrastination and unoptimized submissions. A tutor can help you make a plan and stick with.   They know what to do and how long it will take.   Most importantly, they can check -n and hold you or your student accountable for completing tasks on time. In this way, you can eliminate procrastination and mitigate stress â€" while still improving application quality.   A tutor can also make sure the applications are done ahead of time to give ample time for review and adjustments. An experienced, specialized tutor can do much more than help students improve grades and test scores.   If you or your students are preparing college applications, consider an in-home Irvine tutor to help guide and improve the process.   Don’t let these applications get submitted without exact time, effort, and expert knowledge making sure that they are the best that they can be. What options does a student have after GCSE`s - Tutor Hunt Blog

What options does a student have after GCSE`s What options does a student have after GCSE`s What options does a student have after GCSE`sSecondary SchoolsIn many ways GCSE`s mark a frontier in in an adolescent`s life. Discounting the possibility of any earlier, precociously acquired accolades, the marks achieved in these exams will probably be the first academic qualifications that could potentially appear on their CV. In many students` minds their GCSE grades will be the first results that really matter. They will have taken many tests before, indeed they will have been regularly graded and assessed for most of their time at school - but by the time of their GCSE`s they will be mature enough to know just how important these exams are. The transition from GCSE to 6th form means the beginning of specialisation, a reduction of the number of subjects being studied. Most students will take 9 subjects for GCSE, but after this the academic range will narrow. Three subjects are the norm for a post GCSE student - their strengths and weaknesses will have been established, and they may well have an idea as to what they would like to study at university. Even though A-levels may be seen the expected route to take after GCSE`s, there are a number of alternatives that may be more suitable. The three main options, apart from entering the workplace directly of course, are NVQs, BTECs, and traineeships. NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualifications, and they are work based certificates, which means they are specifically designed to help students gain `competency` in the workplace. One key feature of this qualification is that they do not have to be completed within a specific time frame. Because of this accommodating feature many students work on completing their NVQs while undertaking a part time job or a work placement. Many employers look favourably upon students undertaking NVQ`s, as it shows commitment and dedication to their chosen career. BTEC stand for a `Business and Technology Education Council` qualification - they were introduced to the UK back in the 1930`s, and continue to be very popular. It is largely a coursework based assessment, and because of this many universities stipulate that students must also posses at least a single A-Level to gain admittance. From 2016 the proportion of coursework in the BTEC course has reduced, and exams now account for a larger proportion of the final grade. Like NVQ`s, BTEC`s are designed to be specialist work-related qualifications - and as such they specifically cater to a whole range of different sectors, such as engineering, business, and ICT. The courses are available at a number of different levels - ranging from the Entry Level Skills for Working Life, through to professional qualifications of Level 7, which is actually equivalent to postgraduate study. Because BTEC`s are tailored to the workplace, and correspond to the myriad of different professions, there are an astonishing number of unique courses - well over 2000 different BTECs, each catering to a different workplace skill. Another post GCSE option is a traineeship. These are short courses which include work experience, and are designed to get a student ready for work or an apprenticeship. They last up to 6 months, and are primarily aimed at those who are qualified below Level 3, aged 16 to 24, along with those who are unemployed and have little or no work experience. Most students who have chosen to continue studying into sixth form will already have decided upon the course they want to take. It can daunting indeed to be faced with such important choices as such a young age. I have often thought that it`s rather unfair that adolescents, barely into their teenage years, are compelled to make these life defining decisions. Looking back on my own career, I can see now how it was profoundly shaped and defined by the subjects I chose to study in my mid to late teens. Career advisors can certainly help - and of course the options available to the student will be constrained by their academic abilities. Ultimately though it will be up to the student which path they choose. 18 months ago0Add a Comment

Definition Endpoint

Definition EndpointIn definitions, it is important to define what is at the end of your spectrum. If you don't define this end point then you might be doomed to wander through uncharted territory. Here are a few of the important principles to consider in defining endpoints. Before we get into the 'what is at the end of your spectrum' elements, let's define what the definition endpoint is. I have found that the definition endpoint is defined as the end point in the spectrum where the atomic quantity at that level has the highest value. It is important to define the end points of an atomic spectrum, because any changes in the amount of element with a specific atomic number can dramatically change the molecular size of the molecule. A change in molecular mass can drastically change the properties of a substance. Therefore, by definition, the atomic density of any substance at the end of its 'schematic' spectrum must be the highest value that can be seen. The fundamental principle of this principle is the most important part of the definition endpoint chemistry process. We must try to identify the most critical (i.e. the most essential) element in the bulk chemical atmosphere. When I use the term 'critical element', I mean that there is only one element that will have that value for all other elements. Here is a way to make sure that you have identified the most essential element in the bulk chemical atmosphere. Take a long hair can of mineral oil, and put it in a window box. Leave it out in the open at room temperature and for a few days. If it crystallizes, it has a value of mineral oil.So, if there is any mineral oil in the environment, you can find it as the final result. By definition, mineral oil will have a large molecular density. As a matter of fact, mineral oil is the critical element. So, to prove to yourself that your understanding of 'endpoint' chemistry has been correct, you must identify the mineral oil as the most essential element in the bulk chemical atmosphere. (And, perhaps, you should start growing a long hair.)If you think about it, if mineral oil is the most essential element, it is likely that there are very few (if any) other elements that can be regarded as being similar in physical properties to mineral oil. Once again, by definition, the most essential element in the bulk chemical atmosphere is mineral oil.I hope this has provided some perspective into the definition endpoint of 'endpoint chemistry'. Although I use the term 'endpoint' rather liberally here, I am implying that this term is applicable to a large range of chemistry that is relevant to the study of the 'chemistry of the end of the spectrum'.

Chemistry of Explosives - Why Students Flunk and Why They Fail to Understand the Class

Chemistry of Explosives - Why Students Flunk and Why They Fail to Understand the ClassIf you are wondering how to choose the best high school chemistry of explosives classes then this article is for you. In fact, this article could save you a lot of time and money, if you simply apply the tips here. Let's start off by looking at the real problems with the class. After that, we will look at what you can actually do to better your life, based on this information. One of the main problems with the typical high school chemistry of explosives classes is that the student is usually running around the class for hours on end, barely understanding a single subject. This usually happens because the teacher is either unprepared or just doesn't want to explain every step. He does however do all he can to ensure that he tells the student how everything will play out. You will learn much more from this, if you take the time to become a student of that class. These classes are typically like these, b ecause the students don't have much of a choice. It just wasn't meant to be. The teacher was simply too busy, to actually teach the students anything new. All he could do was to tell them what the basics of the subject were.Unfortunately, many of the students that enroll in chemistry of explosives will eventually get bored with the class. The class lacks diversity and is very dull. When you have just a few basic subjects to study, the students usually struggle to understand what is going on. Often, the courses will revolve around one subject or another. If you are bored by the class and have no idea why, then you should start taking a different class. Many of the students that choose chemistry of explosives, get frustrated and leave the class. The problem with this is that they just do not get the point that they are supposed to learn from the class. By doing this, they are depriving themselves of the opportunity to gain anything. Finally, if you actually do the math, you will soon re alize that a class like this takes more time than you probably have. You may be just a tad too tired for the class, if you have to stay up all night trying to grasp what is being taught. In fact, you will probably be much more than that, as there are several things that you need to understand when you take chemistry of explosives. If you are going to take chemistry of explosives, it is vital that you know what to do in order to get through the class. We will cover the different types of topics and approaches in the next article in this series. For now, however, know that many of the problems are in the details, not the concepts. Just remember, the teacher wants you to study chemistry of explosives, not get bored.
